Design Intentions:
How does physical performance translate into building form? This design problem led me to creating a dynamic, kinetic facade comprised of pivoting sunshades that resonate with performance qualities.
Theater is all about experience. I designed this theater to be about three primary experiences: A visitor's first impression, a visitor's transition from outside into the theater, and then for the experience once inside the theater.
The first impression is a building with moving pieces across the facade. The transition from outside to inside offers a new experience. As the evening sun shines through the sunshades into the lobby, kinetic shadows evolve and transform on the floors and walls. Looking outward to the campus through these sunshades creates a pixelization and a diffused reality of the outside in order to prepare the mind for a theatrical performance.
